R. H. Tawney, the centenary of whose birth we celebrate this year, was one of the greatest historians writing in English – some would say the greatest – of our time. Tout and Namier were superb professional historians, but Tawney fired the imagination of my generation. His output was relatively small, but almost all of it stimulated profitable discussion.
