Dr McLynn deals with the last military action on English soil, the advance of the Highlanders as far as Derby in the winter of 1745, which he compares to the Long March of the Chinese Red Army in 1934. Historians have often been led into error by not keeping to chronological order: McLynn has taken a counsel of perfection here by chronicling the campaign (November 8th-December 20th) day by day. He is particularly good on military operations, correcting several mistakes about the movements of Wade, Ligonier and others. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary sources he is able to test accounts written at the time with those written subsequently by such participants as Lord Elcho.
