The volume of essays, designed originally as a tribute to Professor Allen Brown on his retirement from his chair in Medieval History at King's College, London, has become a memorial, for, less than a fortnight after its presentation on his sixty-fifth birthday, he died from an illness which he had borne with characteristic courage.

Brown held strong views. He was proud of having been a cavalry (albeit unhorsed) soldier; the feudal castle was at the heart of his interests; and, although in some ways a man in the mould of E. A. Freeman, he idealised the Normans and that preux chevalier, William the Conqueror. He also disseminated his views widely through his university and extra- mural teaching and lectures, his publications, his creation of the. Battle Conference and his work in Suffolk-local history.
