At the Heart of Europe?

Two hundred years after William Pitt took on Napoleon, Europe is in crisis again. Keith Robbins warns Tony Blair that there are no easy fixes to the issues of democracy that have thrown the ‘European project’ off course.

William Pitt, responding to the description of himself in 1805 as ‘the Saviour of Europe’, famously replied that Europe was not to be saved by any single man. England had saved herself by her exertions and, he trusted, would ‘save Europe by her example’. Two centuries later, while modestly deflecting any such description of himself, Tony Blair might nevertheless be inclined to respond in similar terms as he faces a European crisis that may be more than ‘the usual’.
