Ronald Hutton on why it is a miracle for professional historians to publish books.
In these hard times, when the status of professional historians is held to be menaced both by financial restrictions and by declining public attention, it is often lamented that they do not publish more books palatable to a popular audience. I wish to suggest that it is a miracle that they produce any books at all.
