An Approach to Genocide

Lessons from the Auschwitz Project. Robert Carr shares his experiences.

I was fortunate enough to be able to offer my students the opportunity to attend the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz Project’, which is subsidised and organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust charity. Like any teacher, I was pleased to grasp an opportunity to lift History out of the textbook and the classroom. The focus of the project was a day’s visit to Oswiecim in Poland, site of the Auschwitz camp complex. Such a visit, I felt, would help contextualise years of school study of Nazism. It seemed fitting to send students to the location of both Nazism’s and Europe’s darkest hour.

The Holocaust Educational Trust annually invites two sixth-formers from each of the nation's schools and colleges, and is able to send an ever-growing number of project plane-loads to Poland. As the student application deadline passed, I was grateful to learn that I, too, had secured a place as an accompanying teacher.
