Sir Geoffrey Elton: A Memorial

Retha Warnicke pays tribute to one of the first historical advisors to History Review.

Ten years ago, on 4 December, Sir Geoffrey Elton died at his Cambridge home, ending a distinguished career. Born in Tubingen, he became an English refugee in 1939, earned an external London degree with University Correspondence College, Cambridge, in 1943, and went to Cambridge in 1949, advancing to a Clare College fellowship in 1954 and serving as the Regius Professor of Modern History in 1983-88. Knighted in 1986, he held leadership roles in many professional societies, including the presidency of the Royal Historical Society.
