The Frontier Problem in Nineteenth Century Argentina

The impact of the frontier on the history of the United States is well known. Less well appreciated is the fact that the Government of Argentina confronted very similar problems at almost exactly the same period in the nineteenth century. The parallels between United States and Argentine history are uncannily close in this era. In both countries the Indian tribes came to be a serious menace on the frontier at about the time of national preoccupation with a major war, the American Civil War of 1861-65 bearing a close resemblance to the Paraguayan war of 1865-70 in this and many other respects.
