Peter Marshall considers the past impact and present influence of Marxist models to the history of Europe's encounters with other continents.

While 'imperialism', strictly defined as a phenomenon dating from the end of the nineteenth century, features prominently in Marxist writing, the long span of the history of the Europeans' expansion into other continents and of their colonial empires has not been a central theme or attracted systematic treatment in the canon. Nevertheless, the historiography of empire has been powerfully influenced by Marxist approaches.
