Warfare State

 

This book argues that historians, and everyone else, have given too much prominence to ‘welfare’ in the history of the British state in the twentieth century and too little to warfare.

David Edgerton’s central argument is not that we should reject the term ‘welfare state’, but that we need to think of the modern British state in more complex and rounded terms and acknowledge the importance of warfare as well as welfare.
