Jonathan Conlin considers a 1990 article on the past, present and future of history broadcasting, whose pessimistic forecasts have not quite come to pass.
In their article Boxed History Peter Keighron and Mike Wayne surveyed TV history’s past and speculated on future broadcasting trends. The authors’ perspective was coloured, inevitably, by current affairs: the Broadcasting Act (passed that very month) as well as the Education Reform Act 1988, which introduced the National Curriculum. The Broadcasting Act 1990 gave birth to a fifth terrestrial channel and loosened restrictions governing the ownership of independent television franchises.
