Few problems have caused the British Labour movement more consistent irritation than its relationship with the national press. A contemporary reflection of this is the setting up of a TUC working party to look into the possibility of launching a new Labour daily newspaper. As Lord McCarthy and his team look into the prospects for such a paper they may do well to consider the history of the Daily Herald , the official Labour paper which closed in 1964.
Demands for the establishment of a Labour daily paper to counteract the anti-Labour bias of the national press were a current note at Labour Party and TUC conferences in the early years of this century. These demands eventually produced results in the form of two rather contrasting newspapers which appeared in 1912.
