Defeat at Buenos Aires 1806-1807

George Pendle retraces attempts by the British to seize control of Spanish colonies around the La Plata Basin, now part of Argentina and Uruguay.

In 1806, after the renewal of hostilities between England and Spain, Commodore Sir Home Popham on his own initiative set sail with his whole squadron from Cape Town, in the capture of which place he had recently taken part, crossed the South Atlantic, and invaded the Spanish vice-royalty of the River Plate. His expedition included the 71st regiment under General Beresford.
