To some people 'military history' is history which simply concentrates on the details of battles and campaigns. Undoubtedly the movement of armies and the action of troops under the stress of battle makes dramatic reading. But for a full appreciation of why wars happen as they do, the soldiers and the battles and campaigns which they fought need to be seen in the context of their social and political background.
