The Late Republic and Early Empire – that is, the period from the second century BC to the second century AD – has always absorbed the attentions of the majority of Roman historians. In consequence, a great deal has been written and much of it is of the highest quality. Yet still more remains to be done and is being done. Recent advances have been made in two ways.
