The study of Jacobitism is now being professionalised, like English recusant history before it. It is no longer exclusively the province of amateur sentimentalists or sensation-mongers, it is engaging the attention of able young professional historians, its archives are being systematically and accurately explored, and it is becoming domiciled in the arts faculties of many of our universities. One of the pioneers in this field is Dr Eveline Cruickshanks of the History of Parliament Trust, and she has now edited for publication ten papers delivered at a Conference on Jacobite Studies held at the Institute of Historical Research in 1979, which attracted scholars from France, Belgium and the USA, as well as from England and Scotland.
