‘In order to progress, radio need only go backward, to the time when singing commercials were not allowed on news reports, when there was no middle commercial on a news report, when radio was rather proud, alert and fast’, so stated CBS commentator Edward R.Murrow, (1958) subject of George Clooney’s new film released in the UK this month, Goodnight and Goodluck. Here David Culbert looks at the development of radio news commentary in the United States in the late 1930s and the political climate that shaped it.
