The simultaneous publication of these three titles shows how much life is still left in studies of the English Revolution even when so much energy has been drawn off from them into the fields of gender relations, popular religion, and ‘the British problem’. Between them they represent the work of twenty-seven scholars, so that instead of attempting even a summary of most contributions, it seems both more practicable and more interesting here to suggest what they tell us about the state of the subject as a whole.
