King Charles I once wrote that if he could not live as a king he would choose to die as a gentleman. So it proved, and die as a gentleman he did, but there have been those ever since ready to honour him as some- thing more – a martyred saint, Every January 30th, the anniversary of his execution in Whitehall is observed with services and wreath-layings in London by three different societies.
