The Sherborne Missal: Creating a National Treasure

The British Library buys one of the most important manuscripts in England.

In July the Sherborne Missal, an exceptionally lavish volume produced in the early years of the fifteenth century, was acquired for the nation. Following a remarkable series of negotiations, the British Library, various government offices, granting bodies and representatives of the book trade collaborated to ensure that this medieval masterpiece remained in the country and passed into public ownership. The British Library, where the Missal can be seen, is mounting an appeal to raise the funds to meet the remaining payments.
