90th birthday of the eminent History Today contributor

It is not every day History Today has the opportunity to offer 90th birthday wishes to one of its contributors but we are delighted to do so in respect of Professor Charles Boxer who enters his tenth decade on March 8th. His association with History Today goes back over 40 years; we published his first article for us – on the Tromps and the Anglo-Dutch Wars – in December 1953. Most recently pieces by him graced our special issues on 600 years of alliance between England and Portugal and the Anglo-Dutch links via the Glorious Revolution.

These fittingly reflect a career which has established ‘C.R. Boxer’ as a by-word for the definitive coverage of the colonial empires of the Dutch and Portuguese and Far East history.
