Towns that Build Bridges

1998 is the European Year of Local Democracy and Twinning. Last year the first four British-German town-twinnings, Bristol–Hannover, Oxford–Bonn, Reading–Düsseldorf and Coventry–Kiel, celebrated their golden jubilees. Now there are 500 twinned towns, offering links – interweaving individuals, local activities and national trends – that provide a microcosm of Europe’s inter-relationships. Why are there so many successful twinnings between these two nations?
