From Augustine to Alfred - Janet Backhouse discusses the material evidence and new views that are the backcloth to the major exhibition of Anglo-Saxon art and culture opening at the British Museum this month.
Three hundred years of Anglo-Saxon history, from the arrival of St Augustine and his Roman mission at the court of Aethelberht of Kent in 597 to the death of Alfred the Great in 899, are presented in an exhibition to be staged jointly by the British Museum and the British Library over the next four months, complementing the exhibition of later Anglo-Saxon art that they mounted in 1984.
