Oaxaca valley
Highland area of south Mexico where complex societies developed in the 2nd millennium BC, influenced from about 1200 BC by the Olmecs. It was the core area of Zapotec civilization, which developed in the 1st millennium BC, with a ceremonial center at Monté Albán and hillside agriculture terraces and settlements.
