A glossary of historical terms

Wilberforce, William

(1759-1833) English politician, philanthropist and abolitionist, who in 1788 began a struggle for the abolition of the slave trade, which was achieved in 1807. His work included the foundation of the Church Missionary Society (1798), the Bible Society (1803) and the Anti-Slavery Society (1825). He died just before Parliament abolished slavery in 1833.
