A glossary of historical terms
Varna
Early Copper Age cemetery (c.4600-4100 BC) in the Danube basin, close to the Black Sea coast. More than 280 burials of men, women and children have been found, with an extraordinary range of artifacts including pottery, gold jewelry and decorative fittings, copper tools and weapons, and shell beads. Their range and richness may indicate the early development of a complex social hierarchy.
