Valdes, Peter

Medieval French religious reformer from Lyons, a former merchant who in about 1173 began to preach against wealth. His preaching without episcopal license provoked the hostility of the Roman Catholic church, and his attacks on religious authority and the sacraments became increasingly radical. Valdes and his followers, called Waldensians, were declared heretics and subjected to persecution.
