Sumerian city, a rival of Lagash, Uruk, Ur and Akkad in the 3rd millennium BC. It achieved hegemony under King Lugalzagesi (c.2350 BC), who defeated Lagash and unified Sumer and Akkad for the first time. Conquered by Sargon of Agade in about 2330 BC, Umma never regained its former power.
