Umayyad caliphate

Dynasty founded by Muawiya that ruled the Islamic world from 661 to 750. It shifted the center of Muslim power from Arabia to Damascus as Islam absorbed the culture of the ancient Middle East. The Umayyads' compromise between the ideal Islamic society and the needs of secular government allowed Islam to spread from central Asia to the Atlantic.
