A glossary of historical terms
Turkestan
Central Asian territory, first settled by Turks in the 8th century. It grew prosperous from trade. In the 16th century the Shaibani dynasty established an Uzbeg khanate, but new sea routes were already undermining the caravan routes, and irreversible decline had begun. By 1783 it was under Manchu control.
