Tula

The capital of the Toltec empire, now a ruined city 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mexico City. Founded in about 900, Tula was sacked by unknown attackers in 1168 and subsequently abandoned. The Aztecs later removed many monuments and sculptures from Tula for their capital Tenochtitlan, but impressive ruins of temple-pyramids and ball courts remain.
