Tiberius

Roman emperor (r.AD 14-37). Born in 42 BC, he became the stepson of Octavian (Augustus) in 38 BC. After a successful military career, he was proclaimed emperor on Augustus' death in AD 14. A competent ruler, Tiberius became unpopular due to his unappealing manner, family jealousy and charges of treason to destroy his political enemies - real or imagined. He retired to Campania in AD 27 and then to Capri, where he died in AD 37. The rumors of Tiberius indulging in vice on Capri are unsubstantiated.
