A glossary of historical terms
Theodosius I
Roman emperor from A D 379 to 395. Rising to power through his own abilities, he emerged as emperor in the east (AD 379) and, after campaigns in Italy, in the west (AD 387). He was the last emperor to rule the empire as a single unit. A devout Christian influenced by Ambrose, bishop of Milan, he ruthlessly imposed orthodox Christianity on the empire. During his reign Gothic tribes were allowed to settle in Roman territory in return for armed support.
