Teutoburgerwald, Battle of

Battle in AD 9, in which a Roman army under Varus was destroyed on the march by Germans under Arminius, losing three legions and ending Rome's attempts to conquer Germany. Finds of Roman military equipment have placed the battlefield about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of modern Osnabrück.
