Taxila

City in the upper Indus valley, north Pakistan, and the capital of Gandhara. It was conquered by the Persians in about 500 BC, when the region became the easternmost province of the Achemenid empire, and expanded as its commercial importance increased on the caravan route between India and Iran, via the Khyber Pass.
