Dutch navigator and explorer (c.1603-c.1660). In two voyages (1642-43 and 1644) he explored the Indian Ocean, the waters around Australia and the south Pacific, becoming the first European to sight Tasmania, New Zealand, Tonga and the Fiji Islands.
