A glossary of historical terms

Stato dei Presidii

Garrisons on the west coast of Italy, including Piombino and Elba. A Spanish Habsburg possession, they passed to Austria in 1713, and to the Spanish Bourbons in 1735. By the Treaty of Florence (1801) they were annexed by Etruria, passing to Tuscany in 1815, and in 1859 became part of Italy.
