Siam

Southeast Asian kingdom, known since 1949 as Thailand. Settled by Thai migrants from central Asia in about 900, it was a unified kingdom by 1351, with a capital at Ayutthaya. Siam gradually lost territory to the colonial powers (to France in 1893, to Britain in 1903) but retained its independence and became a constitutional monarchy in 1932.
