A glossary of historical terms

Semites

Speakers of the Semitic languages, which originated in Arabia and western Mesopotamia. They migrated and conquered neighboring regions (3rd-1st millennia BC), replacing populations or establishing ruling elites that imposed their own languages. The Semites included the Akkadians, Amorites, Canaanites, Hebrews, Aramaeans, Chaldeans, Phoenicians, Sabaeans and Arabs.
