A glossary of historical terms

Seljuk Turks

A branch of the Ghuzz Turks who between 1028 and 1038 swept into Persia, defeating the ruling Ghaznavids and establishing control over Qarakhanid lands to the east and over Iraq, Syria and Anatolia. Seljuk power in Transoxiana ended in 1141, but continued ˜in Syria and Anatolia until the mid-13th century.
