A glossary of historical terms
Saffarid dynasty
Persian dynasty ruling from Seistan, on the frontier of Iran and Afghanistan (861-1003). The name, meaning coppersmith, derives from the founder's profession. By the 890s the Saffarids had expanded to India in the east and threatened Baghdad in the west, but the defeat of 'Amr in 900 and the rise of the Ghaznavids in the 10th century ended their influence.
