Puerto Rico

Caribbean island, visited by Columbus in 1493. The first Spanish settlement was made by Ponce de Leon in 1508, but the island remained under-developed. A plantation economy only grew after 1830. It came und `er American rule in 1898. Puerto Ricans were given US citizenship and self-government in 1917 but have yet to decide to accept full statehood.
