Pizarro, Francisco

Spanish soldier (c.1475-1541). In 1531, with one ship, 180 men and 37 horses - later joined by a further two ships - he conquered the Inca empire after kidnapping the emperor Atahualpa, whom he executed. Pizarro then consolidated his hold on South America.
