Pericles

Major statesman of Athens in the 5th century BC (r.490-429 BC). Pericles masterminded the coming of democracy (461 BC) and retained a leading role as a general for 30 years. He was associated with the glorification of Athens, not only in his famous funeral speeches, but in buildings such as the Parthenon.
