Pataliputra

Ancient city of northern India, on the site of Patna in Bihar state, founded in the 5th century BC as the capital of Magadha; it was also the Mauryan capital. The city was sacked by the Bactrian Greeks in 185 BC, but revived to become the Gupta capital in the 4th century AD. It was abandoned three centuries later but was rebuilt by the Mughals.
