Ogaden

Arid region of eastern Ethiopia. It was annexed by Italy in 1935 and liberated by British forces in 1941. Somalia invaded the Ogaden in 1977 and encountered Soviet-equipped Ethiopians backed by Cuban volunteers and Soviet advisers. In 1978 Ethiopia regained the region. Sporadic guerrilla warfare continued.
