A glossary of historical terms
Normans
Descendants of Rollo and the Vikings who settled in northern France. Energetic and belligerent, they conquered England (1066) and parts of Wales and Ireland. In the 11th to 12th centuries they dominated the Mediterranean through conquests of Sicily, southern Italy and Malta. They were notable Crusade leaders. They owed their success to military skill and pragmatic government, adapting local practices to their rule.
