A glossary of historical terms
Nagasaki
Japanese industrial city on the Kyushu coast, target of the second American atomic attack (9 August 1945) in World War II. Some 36,000 people died instantly; many more died slowly of radiation poisoning. The plutonium weapon ("Fat Man") dropped had the same destructive power as the bomb dropped over Hiroshima three days earlier. Nagasaki has since been rebuilt.
