King of the Hittites (r.1295-1271 BC). He opposed the Egyptian attempt under Ramesses II to regain control of Syria and inflicted a strategic defeat on the Egyptian pharaoh at the Battle of Qadesh (c.1285 BC), successfully extending control as far as Damascus.
