Macedonian dynasty

Byzantine dynasty (867–1056) founded by Basil I in 867, so called because of the family’s place of origin, though in fact the family was Armenian. The achievements of the Macedonian emperors in the 9th to 10th centuries were the reform of the army and civil administration that enabled the empire to overcome the Bulgar threat. After 1028 the failure of direct succession led to a series of weaker emperors coming to the throne through marriage to Empress Zoë.
